In 2018, the decades-long continuous activity on the East Rift Zone ended, and the summit lava lake drained following an intrusion into, and eruption from, Kīlauea's lower East Rift Zone. At the summit, a vent within Halema‘uma‘u hosted an active lava pond and vigorous gas plume from 2008 to 2018. From 1983 to 2018 eruptive activity was nearly continuous along the volcano's East Rift Zone. Since 1952, Kīlauea has erupted dozens of times. Kīlauea ranks among the world's most active volcanoes and may even top the list. ![]() The caldera was the site of nearly continuous activity during the 19th century and the early part of the 20th century. Hawaiian chants and oral traditions tell in veiled form of many eruptions fomented by an angry Pele before the first European, the missionary Rev. Kīlauea is the home of Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess. Hawaiians used the word Kīlauea only for the summit caldera, but earth scientists and, over time, popular usage have extended the name to include the entire volcano. ![]() In other words, Kīlauea is to Mauna Kea as Kama‘ehuakanaloa (formerly Lō‘ihi) is to Mauna Loa. In fact, the summit of Kīlauea lies on a curving line of volcanoes that includes Mauna Kea and Kohala and excludes Mauna Loa. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kīlauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth. The collapse occurred during a paroxysmal phase, of which there were 10 before.Topographically Kīlauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kīlauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. The landslide masses caused a tsunami, which sent an early warning to the coasts of the surrounding islands. On December 22, a large part of Anak Krakatau collapsed. 5, 2019 Researchers have developed a new isotopic method to analyze the recent history of large stratospheric volcanic eruptions, using 2,600 years' worth of records contained in ice. In December 2018 a new tragedy occurred in Krakatau. Lava flows reached the south coast and caused it to grow. By October 2018, Anak Krakatau had gained considerable height. In the following months a broad spectrum of eruptive activity could be observed: strombolian eruptions and Vulcan explosions produced tephra. The first ash eruptions occurred on 18 June. It was not until the early summer of 2018 that there were increasing signs that the volcano would awaken again: new high-temperature fumaroles formed and seismic activity increased. A little later it became quiet around Anak Krakatau. They quickly reached the coast and let the island grow. An eruption began during which lava flows were promoted. In September 2012 the eruptions changed their character. After a few years the depression of 2007 was filled and the volcano rose again. There were only relatively short periods of rest. Recent eruptions of Krakatoaīetween 20 Anak Krakatau was very active. However, Anak Krakatau is not permanently active. Since then, periods of increased activity persist. In October 2007, the most recent eruption phase began: below the main crater at the 400-foot summit, a new crater blasted free. In recent years Anak Krakatau's activity is characterized by strombolian eruptions a short discharge of lava flows occur and an occasional volcanic eruption. It was not until 1930 that the "Child of Krakatau" became a stable island on which new life could soon take hold. The small volcanic island sank several times back into the depths of the ocean, consumed by the relentless surf. Since 1927 the new volcanic island Anak Krakatau has emerged in the place where once this part of the world was destroyed. ![]()
